Last night we went to a new Pho restaurant in town and it didn’t turn out well at all. First off the food was just okay but it was crazy how it was served. I got my dish and we sat around and then they brought us our appetizer and then they finally brought out Rob’s meal but then he had to wait for the sauce to go with his meal and then they brought out the egg to go with my dish which was like a freaking hockey puck on the bottom all over the course of about 20 minutes.


And it just so happens Rob and I realized just how dorky I really am which didn’t exactly elevate my dining experience :)

We’re eating and in walks Rob’s friend and he comes over to the table to say “hi”. Ryan and Rob fist bump because they’re cool or whatever and then he puts his fist out for me to bump.

Now I just literally saw the fist bump in action and I still messed it up. To be fair, I don’t know if I have ever actually done a fist bump. I’ve seen them on TV but I’m more used to a hug as a greeting than a fist bump. But no matter, rather than completing the bumping motion I put my hand on top of his fist. And held it there. Hmm. Rob tried to make me feel better after Ryan left by saying “he really should have thrown scissors” and it did make me feel so much better because, as we’ve already discussed, I’m a total nerd :)
Black sticky rice is an easy and exotic dessert that everyone loves. Serve with mango or ice cream for a great sweet treat!

This trip to a new place to nosh was because we were totally hoping to find a new Asian cuisine restaurant to replace our most favorite Thai restaurant of all time, Sasi’s. Lee and Sasi, the owners decided to pack up their things and move to Thailand and we’re very happy for them but also sad to see them go. One of the things we LOVED from Sasi’s was their black sticky rice with strawberry ice cream. Now it’s normally served with mango and we ordered it that way for AGES until Lee insisted we try it with the ice cream. After that, I never, ever went back to the mango. Strawberry ice cream is truly the perfect complement!

Since we can’t get our black sticky rice with strawberry ice cream fix at Sasi’s Rob and I make our own at home. It’s a really easy slightly sweet dessert that is sure to impress. If you love rice pudding, you might very well flip for black sticky rice.

Black Sticky Rice Recipe

Often served with mango, black sticky rice is a slightly sweet and totally exotic dessert that is so easy to make. Surprise even the most seasoned Thai food diners by presenting with strawberry ice cream, an unexpected but perfect addition to this amazing dessert!
  • 1 cup black Thai Rice -NOT Chinese Forbidden Rice
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • mango or strawberry ice cream to serve
Instructions
 
  1. First off black Thai rice is NOT Chinese Forbidden rice. Both are black but the Thai rice is much more glutinous so that we get that lovely STICKY rice texture. Just so that you know what to get, this is Black Thai Rice (or purple sticky rice). This is what not to get, Chinese Black Rice (or Forbidden Rice).
  2. Wash rice in cool water draining and repeating 3-4 times. The water will become purple and cloudy but it will lessen as you continue to wash the rice.
  3. In a medium sauce pan add your rinsed rice, coconut milk, water and brown sugar. Stir to incorporate.
  4. Cook over medium-high heat until boiling.
  5. Reduce heat to a simmer and cover. Simmer for 20 minutes or until the rice is thick and bubbly.
  6. Remove from heat and allow to rest.
  7. Serve warm with strawberry ice cream or mango.
